SERVICES we provide
Since 2007, Surgical Volunteers International has treated dental patients in Vietnam, Guatemala, Haiti, and Egypt. We have changed lives performing dentistry, and have provided further education on oral hygiene so that communities can enjoy an improved quality of life for years to come.
Due to the poor living conditions, a lack of health education and low accessibility to dental care, people in developing countries are greatly affected by oral disease and other hygienic issues. Unfortunately, there is little to no infrastructure in place to provide people in these countries with dental education and dental care. As a result, many people, especially in rural communities, live their lives oblivious to the importance of dental hygiene and subsequently suffer from many serious oral diseases and related conditions.
Types of Dental Problems
The most pervasive dental problem experienced by people in developing countries is gum disease (periodontal disease). This condition is caused by poor oral hygiene, and often leads to many other serious complications. Most often, gum disease leads to tooth loss, which is a widespread issue among these populations. Eventually, gum disease and tooth loss can make it more difficult to eat and further aggravates the malnutrition that is so commonly seen in developing countries.
How We Help
Surgical Volunteers International helps by providing both educational and treatment services to underprivileged communities in need of dental care. By providing much-needed dental care, we have helped patients overcome serious oral diseases and enjoy an improved quality of life. Furthermore, by providing education to health professionals and the general population, we give residents the ability to care for their own dental health and minimize any future dental issues or oral diseases. Since poor dental health is so common among these populations, dental care is among the most impactful services that we can provide.
